Soccer Wrap Up

The new FIFA world rankings were released yesterday.

World Cup champion Italy vaulted up to #2 while Brazil remained #1. USA plummeted (deservedly so) from #5 to #16. For some reason Asian teams took a major hit. Iran dropped 24 places from #23 to #47, Japan fell from #18 to #49, and Korea dropped from #29 to #56. Huh? The other 2 Asian teams falling I understand. They never won a game in the Cup. But Korea beat Togo, tied the eventual runner up France, and they drop 27 places? I don't get it.

In other interesting news, German coach Juergen Klinsman resigned from the national team and it is now rumored that he may become the next US coach! That's awesome! Bruce Arena had a good run in 2002 but his team just failed to show up in 2006. Klinsman, a California resident, would be a perfect replacement as he would bring an exciting brand of football to the States. I really hope this rumor comes true.
