Singing Contest Tryouts
Went to go check out the "tryout" for the Korean Singing Contest that will take place at the Korean Festival this Saturday at Kapiolani Park. It was held at Cafe Duck Butt on 4pm this past Saturday.
They had intended to have categories for Koreans and non-Koreans but only 13 total people showed up to participate so they did away with that idea and there was no elimination of anyone because they had planned to keep 12 finalists so to just cut one would be too cruel I guess. So the only rules in effect were that you had to be a Hawaii resident and you had to sing a Korean song.
The participants varied a bit. There were some female high school and college students, a couple of young males, a few aunties and a couple of uncles. All were of Korean descent except for 2 men who were locals.
The talent level? Hmm....let's just say it was okay. A few were pretty good, but most were mostly average. They would be going along okay during the verses, but all of a sudden when they'd hit the hard parts in the chorus...yikes! Nah, but I give all of them credit for having the courage to do this stuff. It's not easy! But I really wish they'd do away with the karaoke monitor. Most of the singers just stood in front of the monitor and read the words as they sang. No showmanship whatsoever. They should make the participants memorize the words and actually put on a performance instead of standing still, looking at a screen, and not even look at the audience. Hopefully when they perform for real on Saturday they do better.
The MC for this portion will be Mark Shim of 1540AM Korean radio. Meh. Not really a fan. He really likes the sound of his own voice and his jokes are not funny.
Funny story...I was sitting in one of the booths watching everyone perform when a man enters the place and sits right next to me. I didn't even bother to look at him to see who it was but then the MC announced his arrival and said his name. That's when I realized who it was. Gulp! He was the father of a girl I had gone out with a few times and he knows that I did too. Don't know if he recognized me but I wasn't gonna make the first move. What would I say anyway? "Hi Mr.____, remember me? I went out with your daughter and then didn't call?" Let's just say that if felt really a-w-k-w-a-r-d.....LOL
