3 Fast 3 Furious!
Caught the movie The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. I was a fan of the first 2 FATF films, especially enjoying the fun of the 2nd one over the fake wanna be seriousness of the first one so I was kind of looking forward to the 3rd installment. There is no connection between this film and the first 2 (well, except maybe for a little surprise) so no need to go to Blockbuster before checking this one out.
Lucas Black (Sling Blade) plays Sean, a trouble making high school kid who gets transferred from school to school because of his antics. After a car race where he trashes 2 cars and a residential development area, he's forced to go to juvenille hall or move to Tokyo to live with his Dad. No brainer, right? After arriving in Tokyo, he wastes no time getting acclimated because of course, everyone he meets speaks perfect English. He hooks up with a racing crowd but Japanese racing is different from American racing. The Japanese "drift", meaning they abuse their hand brakes and tires to glide, drift, etc. their way around sharp bends and turns. Sean pisses off the wrong people in this world and is forced to compete in a drift race to earn his freedom.
Okay, first of all, the plot of this movie is beyond ludicrous. Absolutely nothing storywise makes sense. Kids who can afford tens of thousands on custom built cars are trying to catch deals by buying bootleg iPods, authority figures do 180 turns on their morals and let the kids do whatever they want even if it means they may die, and gangster big bosses take interest in a car race between high school kids, even after he's already received his money. Whatever. And the actor playing the bad guy thinks that all it takes to be a bad ass is to walk around with your shoulders hunched forward like a hunchback. But you know what? It's all good.
Forget about the ridiculous plot and just watch it for the crazy car stunts. There's some mind blowing stuff in there. All of the car scenes are done really well and are an upgrade from the previous 2 films. That's what these films are all about anyway, right?
Plus, actor Sung Kang who also worked with director Justin Lin on Better Luck Tomorrow is a cool cat. You should also check out his work in the indie film The Motel. I hope this actor gets a big boost in his career cuz he's got charisma.
Overall, a fun film for its car stunts but definitely not for its story.
6/10.
