UH Sports Weekend Part I

Did a double dip of UH sports this weekend.

On Friday, I took my Dad to check out the season opener for the UH basketball team against the University of San Diego. Unfortunately, we lost by 1 point but it was a very entertaining game.

- Our team has no real talent this year. Just a bunch of blue collar hard working guys...but no real talent.

- With "Little" Matt Gibson out of the game, it was apparent that we have no real ball handlers. Forward Bobby Nash was bringing the ball up the court lots of times!

- Freshman G Kareem Nitoto is a pretty solid defender. Coach Nash made the 2nd half adjustment of putting Nitoto on USD's best shooter and he pretty much shut him down in the 2nd half.

- G Jared Dillinger is a wildcard! That guy is so out of control. He puts up shots like there's no tomorrow and runs around like a chicken without its head. Leads to a lot of turnovers and bad shot selection. A hustler and gambler on D though which leads to some steals.

- It was good to see C Stephen Verwers put down some slams.

- Overall, I think it's gonna be a long season. Coach Nash has to find his groove and make the most of minimal talent. I think a .500 record is a pretty fair goal this year.

No talent?! Didn't you see that twig of player, Adhar Mayen? So skinny, but moved pretty well. ;)

Nitoto can be the point but as a freshmen, he'll be making mistakes. First time in a long time, UH has had a speedy guard that can keep up with the smaller guards in the league.

Jared Dillinger is a maniac! Love him! No conscious whatsoever! Just like me on the court. ;) What shot does not look good? He's a lefty which always helps. You can't teach hustle.

Yep, Verwers actually threw a few down but I'm still a little wary that he can consistently do that.

Watching Nash was way different than watching Coach Wallace. After Nitoto came in, he had like 3 turnovers in a row. One, Riley would not have played the freshman at all, two, Riley would have been screaming at Nitoto to get in the game, and three, Nitoto would have been benched for the rest of the game. Coach Nash looked calm, didn't really say a thing, but kept encouraging the team. Very different.

Long season, but you see the building blocks for future seasons.

Yeah, when Nitoto first came in and got called for carrying, I was like..."oh boy...here we go again.."

And you're dead on about Riley. Nitoto would've never seen the court if RW was here and he would've got the quick yank after the first few TOs.

I was disappointed in Riley Luttergodt. I thought he'd develop into a more solid player. But it's just one game. We'll see how he ends up.
