Real Live Transformer Pic.....sweeeet.....

For those 80s cartoon fans like myself, there's gonna be a live action Transformers movie to be released in 2007. It's being directed by Michael Bay (Bad Boys 1,2, The Rock) and is currently filming.

Well, a picture of Bumblebee (remember him? the VW bug?) has been leaked onto the internet. But he's not a VW bug anymore and is now a Camaro. Apparently according to internet buzz, VW wouldn't release the VW Bug model to the movie so they couldn't use that car in the film so they changed it to a Camaro. The movie studio behind the movie has since forced all websites to pull the photo so its not readily available anymore but luckily I saved it onto my harddrive. So here it is! A real life transforme in all its glory! (Jeez, I am such a geek!!!) =)

Dragon Tiger Gate Trailer

Hong Kong action film fans pay attention! The trailer for Donnie Yen's latest and greatest Dragon Tiger Gate is up on youtube. I guess it's not official yet but still, we get to see it now. HK has been on a bit of an upswing the last few years with the light and fun House of Fury and last year's gritty and great SPL. If you're a fan of martial arts action, you should definitely check these films out!

And now, Donnie Yen returns with Dragon Tiger Gate. Apparently, it's based on a comic book story. Looking at the trailer, I'm blown away. The choreography, lighting, stunts all look awesome. Can't wait for this one to hit DVD!

Hopefully HIFF will show it at this year's Fall Festival as well!

Spidey 3 Teaser is Up!

After viewing the teaser, I'm already waiting for this film. While I was disappointed with the 2nd film (although everyone else seemed to like it), I'm anxiously looking forward to the 3rd installment mainly because of they're bringing back classic Spidey storylines. Primarily...Venom! I wonder how they're gonna explain the black costume though. In the comics, Spidey picked up the black costume on an alien world during the Secret Wars saga. That black costume actually turned out to be an alien symbiote that was trying to take over Peter Parker's body. The alien costume later merged with Eddie Brock to form Venom. Eddie Brock in the film will be played by Topher Grace.

The film will also introduce the Gwen Stacy character who played an important part in Spidey lore. Gwen Stacy was Peter Parker's first love and she died at the hands of the Green Goblin.

Also, in addition to Venom, there will be the villain Sandman played by Thomas Haden Church (Sideways). He's a classic Spiderman villain and his CGI in the teaser looks great. There also appears to be another Green Goblin who I'm assuming is Harry Osborn (James Franco).

In any case, this teaser looks way cool.

First Pics with New Dica

Talk about fast delivery. I ordered my Casio Elixim camera on Tuesday from Amazon.com and I received it on Saturday with free shipping! That's fast.

My first opportunity to take photos with the dica came the next day on 6/25/06, the anniversary of the start of the Korean War. Every year, there is a memorial ceremony held at Punchbowl Cemetary to honor the veterans of this war. This was the 2nd straight year I've attended and it's a very interesting event. Veterans of the war give brief speeches of their tour during the war, various community groups presents floral wreaths, and there is also a keynote speaker. The whole ceremony takes about an hour and lunch is served afterwards.

I was there representing the Korean American Coalition - Hawaii Chapter and presented a wreath during the ceremony. KAC-Hawaii also donated $500 to the Korean War Veterans Association to help pay for the food which included kalbi, japchae (noodles), fish jun, and other items. Unfortunately I was unable to stay for the food service.

Here are a few photos I took with my new dica during the ceremony:

3 Fast 3 Furious!

Caught the movie The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. I was a fan of the first 2 FATF films, especially enjoying the fun of the 2nd one over the fake wanna be seriousness of the first one so I was kind of looking forward to the 3rd installment. There is no connection between this film and the first 2 (well, except maybe for a little surprise) so no need to go to Blockbuster before checking this one out.

Lucas Black (Sling Blade) plays Sean, a trouble making high school kid who gets transferred from school to school because of his antics. After a car race where he trashes 2 cars and a residential development area, he's forced to go to juvenille hall or move to Tokyo to live with his Dad. No brainer, right? After arriving in Tokyo, he wastes no time getting acclimated because of course, everyone he meets speaks perfect English. He hooks up with a racing crowd but Japanese racing is different from American racing. The Japanese "drift", meaning they abuse their hand brakes and tires to glide, drift, etc. their way around sharp bends and turns. Sean pisses off the wrong people in this world and is forced to compete in a drift race to earn his freedom.

Okay, first of all, the plot of this movie is beyond ludicrous. Absolutely nothing storywise makes sense. Kids who can afford tens of thousands on custom built cars are trying to catch deals by buying bootleg iPods, authority figures do 180 turns on their morals and let the kids do whatever they want even if it means they may die, and gangster big bosses take interest in a car race between high school kids, even after he's already received his money. Whatever. And the actor playing the bad guy thinks that all it takes to be a bad ass is to walk around with your shoulders hunched forward like a hunchback. But you know what? It's all good.

Forget about the ridiculous plot and just watch it for the crazy car stunts. There's some mind blowing stuff in there. All of the car scenes are done really well and are an upgrade from the previous 2 films. That's what these films are all about anyway, right?

Plus, actor Sung Kang who also worked with director Justin Lin on Better Luck Tomorrow is a cool cat. You should also check out his work in the indie film The Motel. I hope this actor gets a big boost in his career cuz he's got charisma.

Overall, a fun film for its car stunts but definitely not for its story.

6/10.

South Korea Eliminated from World Cup

With their 2-0 loss to the Swiss today combined with France's 2-0 win over Togo, South Korea was eliminated from the 2006 World Cup tournament.

Watching the game, I'd have to say that the Koreans played very evenly with the Swiss, but the breaks just did not go their way. And the officiating was very questionable as well. An obvious handball in the Swiss goal box was not called in the first half which would have led to a Korean penalty kick. Then in the 2nd half, the sideline referee clearly raised his flag signaling offsides on the Swiss so the Koreans stopped play but the head referee did not see the flag raised and allowed play to continue leading to an easy goal for the Swiss. This goal should not have counted but it stood. Other than the nice Swiss goal headed in by Senderos, the two teams were very even.

Perhaps Korean coach Dick Advocaat made a crucial mistake in starting 20 year old striker Park Chu Yeong in such an important match. He was making his first World Cup appearance in a very critical game and his inexperience clearly showed as he continued to lose balls to the defensive minded Swiss. And his foul in the first half led to the Swiss free kick on which they scored. I'd have to question putting in such a young player in that situation. He was subbed out in the 2nd half, but by then it was too late.

All in all, I'm proud of the Korean team. They proved that they can win outside of their home country by beating Togo and they tied a Top 10 French team. They played gutsy and never gave up. I was especially impressed with Lee Cheon Soo and Jo Jae Jin. Our defense however will really need to improve in the next 4 years. I'm already looking forward to 2010!

Click!

Caught a free sneak preview of the new Adam Sandler movie Click last night at Dole Cannery. I got there a little late so we ended up sitting in the 4th row which ended up not being too bad. Originally, we were in the far end of the 2nd row which really sucked but luckily convinced a high school kid who was saving 2 seats in the middle of the 4th row to give them up. Sucka!

Anyways, it was a pretty good film. But don't expect the laughfest you're shown in the trailer. All that funny stuff happens in the first half of the film. The premise for the film is that Sandler plays a busy architect who always puts his job before his family. To make his life easier, he looks to buy a universal remote control (from the "Beyond" section of a Bed, Bath, and Beyond store). He meets Morty (played by the always awesome Christopher Walken) who gives him a magic remote control. Sandler soon finds out that he can use the remote to not only control his gadgets, but his life! He then proceeds to use the remote to avoid anything humbug like fights with his wife and doing his work.

The comedy comes from when he experiments with the remote but the 2nd half of the film turns more dramatic as the consequences of his actions are explored. Sandler has recently tried to get rid of his schlubby goofball image by trying real acting in films such as Punch Drunk Love and Spanglish and I think he does a good job of balancing the 2 images in this film. He ain't no De Niro, but he's certainly decent, if not good. I'm a fan of his and will watch anything he makes, whether it be comedic or serious. I don't know, maybe there's something wrong with my medulla oblongata.

I'd recommend this film, not as a comedy, but as a dramedy that makes you look at your life and how you choose to live it. The ending was quite predictable, yet pleasant nonetheless. Also watch out for actors who showed up in his past films like Rob Schneider (almost unrecognizable this time), Sean Astin, and Henry Winkler. David Hasselhoff is also in it as the horndog boss. And since it's a Sandler movie, there are lots of 80s songs in the soundtrack as well.

And by the way, Kate Beckinsale who plays his wife is unbelievably hot.

Click gets a 7/10.

World Cup - USA Eliminated

Man, did the US really stink it up today. Where was the feisty group that played with guts against Italy? They sure didn't show up today. The US certainly proved that their lofty FIFA #5 ranking was not deserved in this tournament. All of the key members: Reyna, Donovan, Beasley, Kellar, et al. didn't do their jobs. Props must be given to Ghana, however, for making it out of a group that had 3 Top 15 teams. Great play. Now they get Brazil.

Brazil played a beautiful game today. They are so masterful and at ease with the ball. Ronaldo scored 2 goals to pass Pele for most goals scored by a Brazilian in World Cup and is now 2nd all time in World Cup history. The true hero however, was Ronaldhino. The 2 time FIFA player of the year certainly lived up to his hype with his elegant football skills, setting up this teammates with perfect balls. Brazil is really a delight to watch.

And congratulations to Australia and Gus Hiddink! Australia is appearing in only their 2nd ever World Cup and they never even scored a goal in their first appearance. Now with coach Hiddink, they make it to the 2nd round! Hiddink also led the previously winless Koreans to the Final Four in 2002 so he is the man!

Tomorrow, Korea tries to make it to the 2nd round with another Dutch coach at the helm, Dick Advocaat. Korea and the Swiss are pretty evenly matched with similar FIFA rankings and both tying France and beating Togo. It should be a great match. Korea wins and is in. If they end in a tie or lose, tiebreakers will probably kick in unless the disruptive Togo teams pulls an upset and can manage a tie with France. Then Korea will be in no matter what. Bought a new dica!

The impulsive buyer in me couldn't handle it anymore and I've already purchased a new dica. I went to Circuit City after work yesterday to take a direct look at some models and decided on the following....(drum roll)......

The Casio EX-Z600!!!This camera is 6 megapixels and comes with a huge 2.7" LCD. It also got glowing reviews from wherever I researched on the net. It came down to the Casio or this Canon SD-550 model.
The Canon also got rave reviews and was a 7 megapixel dica, but it also cost $330. Plus, I've owned a Casio for the last 2 years and am used to the controls.

The Casio set me back $270 at Amazon. It was the same price at Circuit City but it was only available via shipping (no pick up) so I went with Amazon cuz I didn't wanna pay the shipping costs. Funnily, the different colors of the model all cost different amounts.

The black model was the cheapest at $244 but I didn't like the look of it.
I liked the blue color the best but it cost $299 and I didn't think it was worth the extra $30. Or maybe it was? Hmm....
In any case, I like the compactness of this Casio, plus the big LCD. Hopefully, I'll be satisfied when I receive it in about a week. Gotta love that free shipping!

Any recommendations for a digital camera?

Okay, my dica is now officially fried. I brought it with me to dinner at Shokudo but when it wouldn't turn on, I thought that the battery was merely dead. So I went home and charged it, and it turns out it won't turn on at all now.

This all happened the day that I went parasailing and jetskiing with the Korean celebrity Chae Yeon. Like a fool, even after the guy running the boat warned me that my dica might get wet, I took my dica up with me while parasailing and sure enough, I got dunked deeper than planned in the water due to a sudden wind and my dica got wet. It wouldn't turn on then either, but seemed to work fine the next day. But now, it won't turn on at all.

So...anyone have any recommendations for a new dica? The one that's broken now is a 5 megapixel Casio Elixir. Don't wanna sell the farm for a dica, but want a decent one with a big LCD. Any good sales out there? Wayne's World - you're good at this kind of thing. Help a brotha out!

World Cup Update - Korea and USA both tie - still alive for Round 2

Korea played a great game against FIFA #8 France today, pulling out a tie that felt like a win. Even with its lofty ranking, France has struggled in the World Cup after winning it in 1998. They failed to score a single goal in the entire 2002 Cup and also didn't score in its first 2006 match against Switzerland. That drought finally ended in the 9th minute against Korea when Thierry Henry flicked in a goal past Lee Woong Jae.

In fact, France dominated the first half, skillfully maintaining possession of the ball with crisp passes while Korea didn't even get a single shot off. But then, Korea made a couple of substitutions in the 2nd half, bringing in strikers Seol Ki Hyeon and Ahn Jeong Hwan and it seemed to pick up the pace of their attack. With their newfound aggressiveness, Korea kept the ball on their attack side of the field and then finally scored in the 81st minute. Seol Ki Hyeon delivered a cross from the left side which was headed down by Jo Jae Jin. Park Ji Sung was in the right place at the right time and nudged the ball in off the side of his foot. GOALLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Korea pulled off the tie and given the circumstances, it felt like a win. MVP of the match for me was definitely goalkeeper Lee Woon Jae who made several excellent stops including one that should've been a goal for France but was luckily missed by the referees. Korea now leads Group G with 4 points with the Swiss playing Togo tomorrow.

As for the US, everything that could've went right for them did. Ghana pulled off a miraculous upset of the Czech Republic 2-0 which kept the US's hopes alive. Despite piss poor refereeing against the Americans, they pulled off the tie 1-1 against Italy and are still alive. Unfortunately, they will be without midfielder Pablo Mastreoni and defender Eddie Pope against Ghana due to red and yellow cards that were very questionable at best. Now, the US must beat Ghana and hope Italy beats the Czechs to advance because otherwise, they will be forced into a tiebreaker and with their -3 goal difference, their hopes in a tiebreaker are not good.

USA next plays Ghana on Thursday and Korea next plays Switzerland on Friday.

Shokudo - Pretty good!

I went to Shokudo for dinner last night for my dad's birthday. I gotta admit...I like this place! In fact, last night was the 3rd time I went there in the last 3 months.

The atmosphere is pleasant and the service is above average. And the food came out very quickly, literally less than 5 minutes after we ordered. How the hell?

While admittedly everything didn't taste amazing, there were indeed a few dishes that stood out. The pork cutlet was pretty damn good and the thing that I liked about it was that they sliced the cutlet before breading it so each piece has a full breaded coating around it. That was the first time I'd ever seen that and I was trippin' cuz it was so cool and original.

The chiken karaage was good too. Lightly battered, juicy, and accompanied by a spicy creamy sauce. Yummy.

And you gotta eat the tofu salad. Ono. I think their tofu is homemade but wherever it came from, it's good.

On the down side, the sushi was just so so. Rainbow Roll was okay but Spider Roll was pretty bland and junk. They put too much rice in their rolls. Also, the seafood dynamite was a little too mayonnaisey and the cheese mochi gratin was more interesting than delicious. Also beware that if you order a rice bowl on the side, the bowl is frickin' huge, enough for 2 to share.

Overall, I've enjoyed my meal the last 3 times I've been here and it's also reasonably priced considering you're eating Japanese food. I was gonna take pics but when I got to the restaurant, I realized that the dica's battery was dead so no go. Sorry, next time!

No School or Work Cuz of Soccer? 설마!

Since Korea's next soccer match against France will take place at 4AM Korean time, a lot of companies and schools are allowing people to come in late after the soccer match. Isn't that awesome?

According to this Chosun Ilbo article, some companies and schools are shutting down completely for the day. And I just received and email from a friend in Korea saying that her company will let them come to work at 11AM. How cool is that? Can you imagine that over here?

"Hey boss, the NCAA playoffs are on today so we're all gonna come in for half a day."

Never happen.

Korean World Cup Fever

Since Korea's successful 2002 World Cup run where they finished in the Top 4, the country has been eagerly awaiting this year's contest. There have been many, many events in anticipation of the World Cup with public concerts and TV World Cup specials everywhere.

For the first game against Togo yesterday, about 72% of the country's population was watching the game on TV while another 2.2 million were watching the game at outdoor venues throughout the country.About 300,000 people were watching the game at Seoul Plaza in front of City Hall.

World Cup Fever is definitely at a high and after the first victory against Togo, it's certainly going to get even stronger. Celebrities have been amongst the most visible of supporters as seen here.

World Cup Round 1 Update

Well, the first batch of games for World Cup 2006 are almost over and there have been many surprises thus far making it already a tournament to remember.

Group A: Host Germany (FIFA Rank #19) started off strong with a 4-2 victory over Costa Rica (FIFA Rank #26). They looked especially effecient on offense but the 2 goals they gave up were results of poor and sloppy defensive lapses. Better teams will take advantage of this.

Group B: England (FIFA Rank #10) squeaked by Paraguay (FIFA Rank #33) 1-0, scoring on an own goal off of a David Beckham free kick. The English did not look good at all and will be hoping that striker Wayne Rooney will be available sooner rather than later to jumpstart their offense. In the other match, Trinidad and Tobago (FIFA Rank #47) in their first World Cup, surprised heavy favorite Sweden (FIFA Rank #16) by playing them to a scoreless tie.

Group C: Things went pretty much as planned here as Argentina (FIFA #9) defeated Ivory Coast (FIFA #32) 2-1 and the Dutch (FIFA #3) defeated Serbia (FIFA #44) 1-0.

Group D: Ditto Group D where Mexico (FIFA #4) defeated Iran (FIFA #23) 3-1 and Portugal (FIFA #7) beat Angola (FIFA #57) 1-0.

Group E: The US (FIFA #5) absolutely choked against the Czech Republic (FIFA #2) and lost 3-0 in a heavily lopsided match. It was like the US knew that it didn't deserve its high ranking and just laid down to the powerful Czechs. Coach Bruce Arena wasn't afraid to pass out blame after the match, stating that his star players Landon Donovan, Demarcus Beasley, and Kasey Kellar all made crucial mistakes. After Italy (FIFA #13) beat Ghana (FIFA #48) 2-0, the US has its work cut out to make the 2nd round.

Group F: After Japan (FIFA #18) led most of the match, Australia (FIFA #42) roared back, scoring 3 goals in the game's final 8 minutes to win 3-1. Incredible turnaround. Australia had never even scored a goal in its brief World Cup history and now they have their first win. Australia is coached by Gus Hiddink who also led the Korean squad in 2002 to great success (the Final Four). What a great coach this guy is. And now Brazil (FIFA #1) the heavy favorite has just ended its game with Croatia (FIFA #23), winning 1-0.

Group G: South Korea (FIFA #29) got off to a strong start, defeating Togo (FIFA #61) 2-1. Unfortunately, after my tiring Monday, I was unable to wake up at 3:00AM to watch the entire match. I got up at the 60 minute mark when it was tied 1-1. The first Korean goal was scored by loudmouth Lee Chun Soo off of a free kick, the first goal of that type this year so far.

Then Ahn Jung Hwan scored a beautiful goal to clinch the victory. Am I happy? Of course. Am I satisfied with the win? No. Togo is one of the weaker teams in the field and we should have had an easier time with them, especially after they were down to 10 men after losing a man to a red card. Yet even a man down, Togo had some scary oppportunities late in the game as Korea's defense looked a little ragged. Plus, Korea failed to attack after going up 2-1 and basically killed the clock. With goal differential being a tiebreaker to go the next round, I wanted to see them score another goal especially with Togo a man down. But....a win is a win and after the Swiss (FIFA #35) and France (FIFA #8) played to a scoreless tie, Korea leads this group with 3 points. Daehanmingook fighting!

Long Day on Monday

Man, talk about a Manic Monday. I think Monday was one of the most active days I've ever had and at the end, I was pooped!

After getting up at 5:00AM to watch the US choke and get annihilated by the Czech Republic from 6:00AM to 8:00 AM, I went to the gym in the morning to work out for about an hour and a half from 9:00AM to 10:30AM. Then had a quick lunch and went home for about 30 minutes.

Then, I went to hit some balls at Bay View from about 1:00PM to 2:00PM, getting home at around 3:30PM after making a few stops.

Afer a 30 minute power nap, I headed off to taekwondo class from 5:30PM to 6:30PM, followed by hapkido class which ended at 7:30PM.

After I parked my car at my apartment, I found my whole body start to stiffen up after such a long day of activity. Man, was I sore! After my shower I was ready to hit the sack. Which is probably why I woke up an hour late for the Korea/Togo match which started at 3:00AM!

Yeah, the day may not seem like much to you active types out there, but for this 32 year old (soon to be 33 year old) body, it was a helluva day!

Se Ri Pak Captures 5th Major

The LPGA had its 2nd major tournament of the year this past weekend as most of us are aware cuz Michelle Wie contended till the very end. Even with all the Koreans in contention, I was rooting for Michelle to win cuz she's a local girl (as well as Korean American ^^). But her putting and wedge game betrayed her. All except 1 of her bogeys came after terrible wedge shots that missed the green. From those missed shots, she was unable to get up and down for par. I read or heard somewhere that she doesn't rely on her caddie to help her read putts. Well Michelle, after 35 putts on Sunday it might be a good idea to start listening to your veteran caddie perhaps? Even Michelle said that she hit each putt where she wanted to hit it, meaning she missed due to misreads. But gotta give her credit, only 16 and has fallen one shot short of a playoff in her 3 LPGA tournaments this year, 2 of them majors. Well done.

As for Se Ri Pak, at this time last year she was battling injuries and lost all love for the game. The woman responsible for bringing the current South Korean wave of lady golfers to the LPGA was seemingly headed down the David Duval path of destruction: A former #1 player becoming a footnote. Glad to see Pak, who's already qualified for the Hall of Fame, get her passion and game back. And that was an absolutely fabulous shot to the 18th green in sudden death. One of the best clutch shots I've ever seen.

Alternatives for Plastic Surgery

Them crazy Koreans and their infatuation with plastic surgery! Well, for those who can't afford the pricey procedures, here's an article that lists some cheaper alternatives.

World Cup Baby!!!

The World Cup has officially started! 32 teams from all over the world compete for sport's grandest prize. I've been so waiting for this tournament to begin. For me, this is THE sporting event. Better than the Super Bowl, March Madness, and the Olympics. This is the granddaddy. After all, it's the world championship of the world's most popular sport!

Host team Germany got off to a great start this morning, defeating Costa Rica 4-2. I went out drinking last night and didn't get home till 2AM, yet I was still able to wake up at 6AM this morning to watch this match and am I glad I did! 3 goals in the 1st half, followed by 3 more in the 2nd. Great football. Germany looked cool and collected the entire game, almost like they were playing with the Costa Ricans. Although Costa Rica scored 2 goals, they were more defensive lapses my the German backfield more than anything and the striker was clearly offside on the 2nd goal.

The 2 teams I'll be watching the closest are of course Korea and the US. Here are their schedules (all HST):

Korea:

6/13 Tuesday 3:00 AM - Togo (ESPN2)
6/18 Sunday 9:00 AM - France (ABC) --> HD! Yay!
6/22 Thursday 9:00 AM - Switzerland (ESPN2)

USA:

6/12 Monday 6:00 AM - Czech Republic (ESPN2)
6/17 Saturday 9:00 AM - Italy (ABC) --> HD! Yay!
6/21 Wednesday 4:00 AM - Ghana (ESPN) --> HD! Yay!

From the looks of that schedule, looks like I'll be going in to work a little late on 6/22!

Shooting Stars Event

As you may have seen on the news, there was a Korean celebrity basketball event this past weekend at the Stan Sheriff Center. It pitted Korean drama stars against local bball teams. My best guess would be that about 2,500 - 3,00 people showed up and they all seemed like they had a good time.

The halftime performer was a Korean singer named Chae Yeon. Who is Chae Yeon? Well....she's Korea's top female solo artist and is known for her dance songs as well as being sexy and cute on TV appearances.

Without going into too much detail, I had the pleasure of spending some time with her during her stay in Hawaii. She was great. I was already a big fan of hers before I met her and am even a bigger fan now. It was really weird the other day when I spent the day with her, then went home to watch my weekly X-Men game show (which she appears on) and seeing her on my TV. It was kinda surreal.

I was debating whether or not to post pics on this blog for several reasons....but you know what? Why not, right? There's already tons of photos of her on the net anyway. I don't think too many people read this blog anyways so I'll share just a few. Just a real small taste. Hope you like them!

Backstage at the game

Before an extreme day!

At dinner together
